“The hottest ticket in town… Hamilton has only grown as a phenomenon with its move to Broadway.” – BroadwayWorld.com
“Miranda’s demonstration of talent, skill and savvy earn him a well-deserved gold star, and a goldmine too.” – Huffington Post
Hamilton has been an absolute hit right from the start. It had its debut Off-Broadway on February 17, 2015, at the Public Theater in Lower Manhattan. In the previews, Lin-Manuel Miranda played the lead role of Alexander Hamilton – and it’s as amazing as you can imagine. It ended up scoring eight Drama Desk Awards, including the coveted Outstanding Musical title. At the 70th Tony Awards, Hamilton made history with a whopping 16 nominations and secured 11 awards, including the prestigious Best Musical. It’s worth mentioning that the musical also received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2016.
The trend-setting musical didn’t stop there. The Chicago production of Hamilton began wowing audiences at the CIBC Theatre in September 2017 before opening officially the following month. Across the pond in London, the West End production made its debut at the Victoria Palace Theatre on December 2017. After some December previews, it ended up winning seven Olivier Awards in 2018, including the title of Best New Musical. The show also embarked on multiple national tours in the U.S., the first one starting in March 2017, followed by a second tour in February 2018. Then, in January 2019, the third U.S. tour kicked off with a three-week stop in Puerto Rico, where Lin-Manuel Miranda himself reprised his role as Hamilton. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the musical’s international reach expanded too! The first non-English production made waves in Hamburg in October 2022 after being translated into German.
“electrifying adaptation… a Broadway musical destined for the record books.” – Deadline
“If only every history lesson — and Broadway musical — dazzled so completely.” – NY Daily News
“There has been nothing on Broadway in the past 20 years to rival the riveting, exhilarating and haunting Hamilton!” – USA Today
The production is a fully sung-and-rapped dramatic portrayal of Alexander Hamilton’s life. It depicts his journey as he navigates the world and becomes a pivotal figure in the American Revolution. Hamilton engages in conversations about revolution at a local pub with friends, including the Marquis de Lafayette, offers innovative ideas for a new government as a delegate during the Constitutional Convention, and takes on the role of the first Secretary of the Treasury for the emerging nation. Throughout the narrative, Hamilton is portrayed both as a proactive agent and a victim of political intrigues, involved in the nation’s inaugural major political scandal and persevering through various adversities. Additionally, the production delves into themes of love, portraying Hamilton’s courtship of his wife, Eliza, and the complex dynamics of his relationship with her sister, Angelica.
Upon the movie’s premiere on Disney+, the New York Times wrote another rave review for the famed musical. “Hamilton is a brilliant feat of historical imagination, which isn’t the same as a history lesson. Miranda used Ron Chernow’s dad-lit doorstop the way Shakespeare drew on Holinshed’s Chronicles — as a treasure trove of character, anecdote and dramatic raw material. One of the marvels of the show is the way it brings long-dead, legend-shrouded people to vivid and sympathetic life. The close-ups and camera movements in this version enhance the charisma of the performers, adding a dimension of intimacy that compensates for the lost electricity of the live theatrical experience.”
“Hamilton is the best and most important Broadway musical of the past decade.” – Wallstreet Journal
“About young rebels grabbing and shaping the future of an unformed country, Hamilton is changing the language of musicals.” – New York Times
“It is a revolution: A reclaiming of America’s founding story by a multicultural cast using modern music and themes.” – Associated Press
